Bentonville, AR -- While the COVID-19 outbreak delayed the beginning of the Bentonville Farmers Market’s 2020 season, which had been planned for Saturday, April 18th, the public health crisis has not halted local produce sales.
Downtown Bentonville Inc.’s Farmers Market App has experienced a substantial increase in utilization and sales through February and March. The community organization is now pivoting it’s focus and encouraging area residents to support local food producers during the COVID-19 crisis through its virtual Farmers Market.
“We know canceling farmers markets created a significant hardship both for those that rely on the market for fresh and healthy locally-grown food and the farmers and food producers who rely on the market for their income,” said Andrew Heath, Downtown Bentonville, Inc.’s executive director. “I’m proud of our organization for pivoting our focus, utilizing technology during this crisis, and continuing to support our vendors in a way that is safe for the community.”
The Bentonville Farmers Market app offers a seasonal selection of fresh vegetables, local meats, and artisanal goods, all available for purchase from the convenience and safety of a user’s phone. Local residents can select products, pay online, and pick up purchases at the Downtown Bentonville Inc. office located on the Bentonville Square at 102 East Central Avenue. The organization currently encourages customers to remain in their cars, text when they arrive at the Downtown Bentonville Inc. office, and wait for a runner to deliver their order to the car.
"We are focused on making sure our vendors and members of the community put their health first and foremost as we face this situation together," Heath said. He added that Downtown Bentonville, Inc. follows all health and social distancing guidelines in the handling, packing, and delivery of orders.
The Bentonville Farmers Market app is available year-round and can be downloaded here.
The Bentonville Farmers Market season is tentatively scheduled to begin on Saturday, May 2nd.
