Downtown Bentonville Inc. announces today a new online platform called NWA CARES. The ongoing partnership with Coldwell Banker Harris McHaney & Faucette Real Estate, Downtown Rogers Inc., and Downtown Springdale will run targeted funding campaigns to address urgent needs in Northwest Arkansas and work to increase community awareness.
The campaign’s first initiative will work alongside the Marshallese Educational Initiative (MEI) to collect donations for the Northwest Arkansas Marshallese community devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to information provided by the CDC, the Arkansas Department of Health, and the community directly, the Marshallese community members have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19.
Why is the Marshallese community more vulnerable to COVID-19?
Financial barriers, coupled with cultural and communication barriers, limit the adoption of prevention methods and uptake of testing for COVID-19, seeking medical care, and other health services.
Secondarily, the Marshallese community has one of the highest diabetes rates in the world. Having migrated to the United States beginning the 1980s as Compact of Free Association migrants, Marshallese currently do not qualify for Medicaid, and most have no health insurance.
Additionally, many Marshallese are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic as line workers in meatpacking plants. Springdale, Arkansas, which is home to approximately 12,000 Marshallese residents, is also the epicenter of industrialized poultry processing, which employs hundreds of Marshallese workers.
These local families desperately need our help.
